Why is Overpopulation Bad?
Over population is the single reason Pit Bulls are facing extinction. I know they’re overpopulated and I’m talking about extinction. The reason for that is because there are five types of human relationships with Pit Bulls:
- People who love Pit Bulls, because they have every reason too.
- People who mass produce Pit Bulls, saying they love them, only to exploit Pit Bulls for money.
- People who fight Pit Bulls, also exploiting them for money.
- People who know nothing about Pit Bulls, and claim Pit Bulls are “Tooth Bearing Killers”.
- People who will trash the breed at any expense, no matter what the truth is.
It’s a 1-4 ratio of people who actually love the breed, versus those who are destroying the breed.
I as a foster for the last 5-6 years, am seeing a really big problem arise.
THE NUMBERS OF PIT BULLS has gone literally crazy here in Michigan. Numbers of abuse cases, way up, the number of PUPPIES WAY WAY WAY up…, the numbers being dumped into pounds WAY UP, which of course as you might guess.
Going to petfinder and entering Michigan as a state and pit bull as the dog will bring up so many faces, you will see the shelters are full of bullies and bully mixes of course.
With a market flooded of dogs needing homes, rehoming, and puppies, dogs are dying in shelters not so much due to fear of breed and laws as previous years, but due to there are not enough homes out there. Dogs are sitting in fosters , cute, young, happy go luckies for YEARS. yes..years.
Our group has even knocked the price for long sitting pit bulls (over 4 months ) in foster care down to 75.00 for an entire month (this is for fully vetted, microchipped, speutered dogs!!). And we even have said some that are long term are flipping FREE with approved application of course.
And still guess what.. hardley any takers. The number of dogs out there is astounding. And yet people continue to increase the numbers of pups out there.

Over-Population is a Major Issue
The Pit Bull breed makes up 5-9.6% of the United States dog population. In 2007, there were above 72 million dogs in the United States provided by American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. That’s between 3,600,000 and 6,912,000 Pit Bull breed dogs in the United States. So, for our example we’ll take the average percent between 5 and 9.6, and use 7.3 percent, which would give an average estimation of the Pit Bull population in the United States. That leaves us with 5,256,000 Pit Bulls. There are more Pit Bulls in the United States at 5,256,000, then there are people in countries like; Norway at 4,875,700, Ireland at 4,459,300, New Zealand at 4,363,600, and the list goes on.
If people can control their own human populations, why is it that we cannot with one breed of a dog.
IMHO a huge contributing factor to the population explosion is the widely-held idea that you can make money (and not report it on your taxes!) selling pit bull puppies. SI meet so many people who “have heard” this. I think it leads people to try to backyard breed even if they are not personally interested in pit bulls — it’s like earthworm ranching or the old “raise chinchillas for fur” home moneymaking schemes people who need money have always gravitated towards. Results are, of course, many many puppies; bad breeding practices; and disinterested “owners” looking only to hold down their costs.
Is it possible to make money breeding pit bulls? I don’t know. Can we somehow make it so it doesn’t pay? Can we oppose this belief somehow?

BSL?, Why Care?
Breed Specific Legislation is something you may or may not have heard of, but has certainly been a major part of the fight to defend Pit Bulls. Breed-Specific Legislation by definition, “is defined as a law or statute that equates the qualities of a dangerous dog with a certain breed, and bans or restricts certain breeds based on identity, not behavior of a specific animal” (Source). You may be thinking, how can they do this based on the appearance of the breed? Well, the look is the reason people mass produce Pit Bulls, and fight Pit Bulls. Since the government cannot ban them based on their actions, they have to ban them because that’s their only solution to solve the actions of those who breed and fight them. Lets ban the breeders, that would seem to be the real solution.
BSL basically states that legislation has the ability to tell people whether or not they can own a breed of any dog. Where as this site is mainly regarding Pit Bulls, Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) attacks many breeds of dogs. Pit Bulls however seem to be taking all the heat. In the news you always hear about the Pit Bulls. How often to you even hear about any other breeds. What is the difference? The difference is the population, and that is not the fault of the Pit Bull. An estimated average of 5,500,000 Pit Bulls are in the United States, yet we never blame the breeders. Statistics are very surprising in favor of the Pit Bull. Breed-Specific Legislation is no different then when the United States segregated whites and blacks. The definition of segregation is, “to separate or set apart from others or from the main body or group; isolate”.
